Filming And Still Shots

Today we got the camera ready to do a characters credit, this one in paticular was a bit of a struggle, the shot is, Genny looking into a mirror and the characters name is writtin on the mirror and she wipes it off, so we found a good toilet with a good mirror in which was in the D Block the upstairs disabled toilet, the mirror is very clear unlike all the other toilets mirors. The original idea was to steam up the top right hand corner of the mirror and then to write the name in with out finger and quickly get the shot, it all worked untill we tryed filming it, as I was standing directly behind Genny so you couldn't see me in the mirror I couldn't see the writing. So we then decided we'd actually have to write on the mirror, first we thought of using red lipstick to give it the horror effect, so we went around asking the girls in our class if they had any lipstick and turns out no-one in our class wears lipstick. We looked through our make-up bags and found some liquid eyeliner. We went back up to the toilets and tried it out, as it was liquid we had to apply quite alot to the brush as it left bits out, so we had to go over letters before we could flm other wise it wouldn't show up the best it could. It looked really good, and finally we could film the shot. we had to film a few takes of this shot as sophie kept making genny laugh when she was looking in the mirror, it would of been fine if the audience was only looking at the back of Genny's head but you could see her face in the mirror too, finally we got to the bit where Genny wipes the writting off with her hand to find that it had dried, so after thinking we had finished we then had to film it all again, Genny came up with the next idea of having a bit of wet tissue in her hand for when she wipes the writting off, so we tried this and it worked. I'm really happy with this credit title evan though alot had gone wrong we worked it out and made it work.

Filming and Creating Still Shots

Today Sophie was late due to trains being cancelled then re-opening, and Genny couldn't get in at all. So while Sophie was making her way to college I done some blogs and got the camera and props ready to start filming, Finally Sophie got in and we got to work straight away, first of all we re-shot the filing cabnet title, this became difficult trying to zoom in and move the camera at the same time gracefully, we tried it several times and in the end decided to film the close up of the degree prop and the zoom/close up of the title on te top filing draw seperatly and would then later edit it in final cut. The Re-make is set in a school and we wanted to include location in the title sequence, so I think a filing cabnet is a good prop for a school setting.
We then went onto the Art Direction shot, our original idea was to have paint brushes and on one of them to have the wood carved off the end of the handle and to have the credit written in pen on the wood. But after the feedback lesson we needed to add horror to our sequence so we decided to change the shot. The first idea was to make a pool of red paint to make it look like a pool of blood on some paper and wringing the credits in the paintusing our fingers, we asked Dave for some red paint but unfortuatley he couldn't find some instead of paint he brought us red ink, so we poured some red ink onto some glossy paper and it looked really good. Sophie told me to try write the credit with my finger and the ink just went back in its place, in result to that idea the ink stained my fingernail! We then had the genious idea of taking a still picture and editing the credit text inon Photoshop

Feedback

From The Class

On Monday we had a feedback lesson where each group went up to the front of the classroom and show the rest of the class what they have done so far with their opening sequence. So me and Sophie got up to show the class what we had so far, after trying to tell the class what we were planning to do we realised that the plan wouldn't work as it was very confusing. So me and Sophie had to sit down and figure everything out, we don't have much horror in the two minute sequence so we were trying to think of ideas to include some horror into it, we were trying to explain that the original of The Sorcerers didn't come across as a horror to me, there was two killings but not by the real villain, which makes the film evan more confusing, I think that the class didn't get what we trying to do as they haven't seen the film and you have to watch it to get the jist of it. We didn't get much feedback mostly questions on how we were going to do it.

Filming

Today Me, Sophie and Genny went around the college to find a location for a few certain shots. We needed to find a toilet with a mirror in it, for a shot which involved Genny writing the name of the actress we are using and wiping it off of the mirror. Our first shot was a picture of the colleges sign, which we are using as a base for our films colleges sign and we are going to use Photoshop to edit it. We also used a wall in the corridor for the background of a close up action, which involved Alexi (a student we used for the shoot) swinging a pocket watch, catching it and placing it in his top pocket.

Animatic

For Our Re-make Of The Sorcerers

A Animatic is a video which shows all the still pictures of the shots we are going to include in our opening sequence. We made a story board of the 15 shots/titles and coloured and tidied them up abit and then took pictures of them and imported them onto the laptops, I then went onto put all the picturs into Final Cut and edited each picture to show what is actually going to happen in the opening sequence, for example if your planning on zooming into something in the picture, you use Final Cut to show this by using the Motion Key Frame, this allows you to do pretty much what you want from zooming in to panning. This is my groups Animatic of The sorcerers.

Minamilist Film Poster For

The Sorcerers

This is my minamilist film poster for our modern remake of The Sorcerers. Its very simple and pretty boring, but i didn't want to put too much detail in as i don't think it really needs it, if you know what the film is about you can figure out what the poster is. It's supossed to be a pocket watch, as in hypotism a pocket watch is usually a popular object to use especially is films.

Mood Board For Remake Of The Sourcers

To create our mood boards we made a list of a few things that that we thought was connected to the film, for example, the picture of the body and the text saying powerful, the film is all about power, so we thought this was a key point to the film and we are going to carry that on through our modern remake of the title sequence. We then had to look on Flickr for pictures to describe the film, we were then given a creative commons sheet so we could find the photos that we wanted to use and then write the link down, for when we create our mood boards. We created our mood boards on Photoshop, and after me and Sophie  had each created our own board we done one together on A3 paper and printed out the pictures and stuck them down to make a collage. I am very pleased with how my mood boards have turned out and think they look really good.

Preliminary Exercise

Evaluation

Continuity Editing

Continuity editing is when you take you clips and edit them together to make it look like it's continuously running  through without it jumping.

180 Degree Rule

The 180 degree rule is when there is a central line and you have to stay on the same side when ever filming, say your filming a conversation between two people and your doing a over the shoulder shot, and you start filming over character one's shoulder on the right hand side of them, and then you switch to characters two's side you have to film on the left hand side of the character.

Match On Action

Match on action is when you cut during an action to another camera angle but showing the action from a different angle but making sure  it picks up from where you cut from so you keep the continuous flow of the scene.

Shot/Reverse Shot

A shot/reverse shot is switching the camera between different characters in the same scene. The camera will be focused on the character who is in the frame looking at the other character who is out of the frame. This is normally used in conversation or reaction scenes.

This is the continuity video that me and my group made, so we got used to the 180 degree rule, Overall I think we understood all the rules and created a good sequence.

Industry Case Study

To Be Continued When Video's Work!

Film Choice Research

The Sorcerers

Characters: The main characters are Marcus Monserrete, Estelle Monserrete and Mike Roscoe. There is a mix of victims and hero's. The villain isn't who you would expect it to be but you sort of click on who is going to turn out to be the villain. There are more victims than hero's and villains in this film and, but it seems as there are two baddies, the audience sees the real villain, and the characters see another villain, a boy who is being controlled by the real villain. Firstly Marcus and Estelle's motive was just to test his new hypnotism, marcus wanted to use it to help people, Estelles motive was that she wanted to feel powerfull. I think that Estelle is pure evil, but Mike is tormented as he is being told to do these things.

Narrative: The Sorcerers is about an elderly couple who have a fixation on hypnotising people, Marcus Intends to use his hypnotism skills to help people, but his wife Estelle has other idea's. They use this new found hypnotism to control another humans mind, they can tell him to do whatever they want. The horror starts to unfold when Marcus and Estelle are having a conversation at the dining room table. Marcus is telling Estelle he wants to use hypnotism to help people, when Estelle has another idea, to use it on someone to benifit them, Estelle convinces Marcus to agree and they go onto talk about the perfect person to test it on. But the real horror unfold when Estelle becomes obsessed with the power she has over Mike, and turns on marcus who is trying to stop his crazed wife. There a few key scenes which show the real horror, for example when Estelle enters Mikes head to play a game with Marcus to show him he cant stop her, she make him pick up a pair of scissors and savagely murder his friend.

Themes: The themes I think the film touches apon are Power and Control. Estelle loves the feeling of being the powerfull one, she evan turns against her own husband when she knows he's weaker than her, she liked playing games with Marcus to show him how powerfull she was and she told him repeatedly that he couldn't stop her that no one could stop her. Estelle also loved the feeling of controlling someone elses mind, knowing that she could tell Mike to do anything and he would do it, she said she wanted to use it to their advantage, but the only thing Estelle done for her own advantage was telling Mike to steal a fur rug for her, everything else she has told Mike to do was out of spite of her husband. I guess these themes are relevent today as everyone one wants to be powerful, but powerful in out minds mean rich and being powerful in your career. I believe the main theme is being powerful as Estelle literally goes crazy for all the power she has over another human, being able to do anything and get away with it.

Setting: The film is set in London. This is important because it gives the room for the scenes. You get the wonderful use of dark streets. The specific time period is the 1960’s, which is a time of ecstasy, parties and fun. I think this time period was chosen because of the difference between the young people and the old people. The Monserrete’s against the wild lives of the younger main characters. The setting mixes in with the characters types; For the Monserretes we have their flat, which is bright and cosy, but there’s a dark part of the flat. The Hypnotism room. Mike’s setting is usually the dark streets of London, we rarely see him in the day time. This gives the audience the feeling that he is dark and bad.

Iconography: The Monserrete’s lab in their flat. In some horrors there are labs for the mad scientist. Another part of the iconography which isn’t usually found is the club the young stars of the film go to. It is the same club every time, this stands out because it is a lasting location. What stood out about Marcus was his walking stick, which is also used as a weapon against him by Estelle. Showing us that it makes him weaker in more way than one. The 1960’s music and clothing stand out because they clash with the general fibe of the film. Though it is not an item, the thing which is more of an icon to the film is Estelle’s way of saying “Marcus”, especially so in the scene when he argues that he will stop her “You can’t stop me, Marcus!!!!”. It is said in such a cold violent tone, that you would not expect it from such an old lady. Also the use of the suspicious music when Mike is under the influence of Estelle. Dark streets are another icon of the film, all of the killings and main actions are taken place at night, and all we see Mike doing is walking the streets, not giving us an exact location.

James Ward's Special Effects Day 2

After James had poured the the plaster into the mould and let it set you are left with a solid mould which is easily peeled aways, the mould is an exact replica of the models face. James then went onto building into the mould with wax clay, this makes it thicker and easier to work with and then you can start sculpting your monster. James started using a rack tool to make the shape of the face and to add detail, he then went onto getting a brush to gently apply white spirit to the clay, then to make the detail look more detailed he dusted talcum powder over it so give it a more realistic effect. James added more detail with a smalled and lighter tool to create the distinktive lines people get on their face. After adding a alot more detail to make the monster make to the best it can James has to wait 24 hours to make deffinate that the mould is securely set. After waiting the 24 hours you can now clean the mask up and finish the mask properlly by painting it. The mask looked amozing at the end of the process.

Opening Sequence and Credits Analysis Of

DogHouse

Characters; Graham,
Vince,
Niel,
Mikey,
Patrick,
Matt,
Graham.

Locations; It is located in West Sussex but in the opening sequence there are a number of locations as it shows each character in either their own home or in someone else's, but it gives you an insight of the characters individual personality/life.
It starts with a shot of a block of flats, Next shot is of a very disgusting bedroom floor, with half eaten curry's still in the container surrounding a bed, this is when you meet Vince. You get the impression that Vince is a lazy middle aged man who properly doesn't have a job and lives of job seeker's allowance. When he talks he sounds like he's from London, and uses foul language. But that on in the opening sequence you find out Vince has just got a divorce from his wife and it explains why he can't be bothered!
Next location is when we meet Neil, He's standing outside of a house in the front garden, but you cant see the house you only see the wall he's standing against, It's a lady friends house, Niel seems to be a lady's man how he talks to the girl, he's very cheeky and rude. He has a really nice car so he must have some money in his pocket.
The next location is a tidy little kitchen, you are greeted by what it seems as a gay couple having an argument, this is Graham and his partner, there's not much to say about graham except maybe he's a little argumentative.
My favourite location is when we meet Mikey, he is walking out of his and his girlfriends apartment for her to follow moaning about him going away, Mikey seems confident and cheeky as how he replies to some of his girlfriends remarks, he's laid back and doesn't seem to take life too seriously.
Next up is Patrick, his house looks well looked after and that is properly thanks to his angry nagging wife. Patrick seems to get very stressed when being around his wife, and uses his iPod to calm him down by listening to stress relief. He doesn't seem to really care or listen to what his wife is saying but he properly has a reason for that.
The character in his own personal location is Matt, He works in a comic book store witch implies he's a bit nerdy, He cares a lot about the comic books and expresses that when a little boy is winding him up about a certain comic. He gets extremely angry with the young boy and curses at him and tells him to get out. After meeting all the characters you see each characters who were angry calling their other half or little boy a "Bastard" This is where i got the idea that the theme was about relationships with partners. Or something to do with friendship with the lads.
You don't really learn much about the story, you get the basics, that each member of Vince's friendship group has left their partners or job for the weekend to have a lads weekend, and that their partners are not exactly the happiest about it which suggests why the film is called DogHouse.
The thing is about the Genre is that from the opening sequence you can't really tell it's going to be a horror, it looks more of a comedy film that a horror, but maybe that's what they want you to think. The only bit that makes it look ab it horror is when the title comes up in big bold white letters then blood is splattered over it.

You don't really hear much music until the ending of the opening sequence, when they are going into the pub, its sort of rock but a more beaty rock, Lads music, as the song is talking about women.
The companies involved with this film production are: Canaby International (Presents),
Carnaby Film Productions, Hanover Films (In Association With) and Molinare Studio (In Association With).

Practitioner Case Study

Three Top Tips To Create An Effective Title Sequence;

The Opening title should give an insight to what the film is about

* Think of the story before the style

* Make it interesting, the title sequence says a a lot about the film and you don't want to bore the audience in the first 4 minutes.

Opening Sequence For David Fincher's Se7en "1995"

Kyle Coopers revolutionary opening title sequence for the film Se7en is known as one of his best piece's of work yet. I think this title sequence is seen as revolutionary because it's so deep and tense and kind of confusing at the same time. The images are dark and mysterious at the beginning the first image you see is an extreme close-up of an open book and some one's hand turning the pages, the camera isn't in focus of the hand so you don't really take notice of it.

A few images later a clip i found disturbing was a close up of someone sort of playing with what looked like a Stanley knife blade with their fingers. The title sequence really makes you think what's going to happen in the film, it keeps you on edge, keeping you guessing for that 2 minutes 11 seconds. The first minute of the sequence isn't as peculiar and out of the ordinary as the last minute, it gets even more demented, there’s pictures of what i think was dead people who had been tortured. at this point you really start to wonder what the film is about there’s' so many things that pops into your head as you watch it.

The clip of the open book with it's pages being turned is shown again, and clips of a close up of someone’s hand writing on paper, so it gives you the idea of a diary. A few clips shown give you the impression some sort of religion as you see a hand crossing out words you see in the bible. All these clips show different meanings, and you cant piece the jigsaw of clips together to know what the films about with just watching the trailer, it makes you want to watch more! Kyle Cooper has made an extraordinary title sequence, it is so clever and doesn't give the film away one bit.

Synopsis Of

The Sorcerer's

Characters: Dr Marcus Monserrat- Boris Karloff
Estelle Monserrat- Catherine Lacey
Nicole- Elizabeth Ercy
Mike Roscoe- Ian Ogilvy
Alan- Victor Henry

Professor Marcus Monserrete and wife Estelle are a strange olderly couple. They enjoy using hypnotism on people. Hynotism is Marcus' profession and he uses it to help people with problems such as: Stammering, Self-Consciousness and Anxiety, he advertises it as "Painlessly Cured". Marcus and wife Estelle plan to persuade a young bored boy to agree "test something" by describing that he would deffinatly not be bored as it will be an "unuasual night" at a diner where Micheal had followed him into. Micheal goes back to Marcus' house, Estelle starts questioning Marcus and Micheal thinks theyr'e wasting his time and tries to leave. That's when Marcus shows Micheal them room, this is the room that Marcu uses as his hypnotism room, After hypnotising Micheal Marcus and Estelle test to see how well it has worked, and to their surprise it has worked better than they could ever imagined, they could actually feel things what Micheal could feel for example when he was washing his hand under cold water, they had total control over his mind whenever they wanted and could tell him to do anything they wanted as long as they concentrated on him. They ddecide to see if they can conrol his mind long distance and tell him to leave and continue with his life, they also tell him that they will occansionally be putting thoughts into his head and when they do, to obey them. Micheal will not remember anything what happened that night. They decide to follow him through their minds to see test the strength on the hypnosis, they can feel his footsteps on the path, and evan sound is transmitted too. Micheal goes back to the club to meet his friends, when asked by Nicole where he has been all that time he says he had been at the diner. It gets mentioned that a reported investigated into Marcus' profession and done a report on it, which I am assuming wasn't a great one. Marcus and Estelle start thinking of plans to use this new found hypnotism to their advantage, Marcus is thinking helping the old people in their retirement and Estelle is thinking money. Marcus wants to talk to some someone to maybe invest in his new found ability, but Estelle has different idea's she throws all the old newspaper clippings onto the table and tries to convince Marcus to keep it too themselves by saying the newspapers had wrecked their lives for 30 years beacuse of them lies. Marcus Tries to tell Estelle that all that is over now, Estelle then bargains with him to use Micheal just for a little bit so they can "Choose". A few days later Estelle is windown shopping in town when she see's a lovely fur rug I think, this is when she gets the idea of usuing Micheal. Estelle and Marcus have started concentrating on Micheal, at this point in time Micheal is waiting in Nicola's living room waiting for her to get ready so they can go out. When suddenly Estelle and Micheal get in contact Micheal stands up and being very quiet and careful he leaves the apartment to obey their command. Estelle Navigates Micheal to the shop where he breaks in and turns the alarm off, while he is looking for the rug, a police officer is patrolling the area and just about to walk past the shop window, Micheal has to hide, because Estelle and Marcus are controlling his mind they feel everything Micheal feels, Marcus is terrified, and not surprisingly Estelle is very excited. Once the police officer has passed the window Micheal takes the rug and replaces it with something simular, The police officer has walked around the back of the store and has found the door open. The police officer then enters the shop to investigate, Micheal ralises he has company and hides, while he is hiding he cuts his hand quite deeply, while the policeman is looking around Micheal checks if the area is clear, he can see the policeman in a room at the end of the shop, he decides to make a break for it and creeps out the back door, and hiding the rug in a bin outside the door before running off. Back at the house, Estelle Saw that Marcus enjoyed it as much as she did, and makes him realise she did, when he admits it he turns over his hand he reveals a cut, in the same place as Micheals, and so does Estelle. After the burgery Micheal returns back to Nicole's apartment, they are talking about if he remembers walking out of the appartment, when he replys, "it just felt like something needed to be done". The next day Estelle gets another idea, of experiencing "Real speed", she will experience "Real Speed" through Micheal's body, coneccting to his mind Estelle and Marcus order him get a motorbike, he invited Nicole for the ride, He borrows Alans Motobike for this particular order he must obey. Micheal is being told to drive extremly fast down the motorway, Estelle is getting an extreme buzz off this, while driving Nicole is feeling very uncomfortable and telling micheal to slow down but he won't listen. Marcus doesn't look very comfortable with this but still continues to concentrate. When returning the bike to the garage that Alan works in Nicole runs over to the car extremly scared. Alan isn't happy and confronts Micheal, Estelle has now gone to a whole new level by telling him what to say, and then makes him start a fight with alan, while fighting Alan's boss comes in and Estelle tells Micheal to hit him with a metal pole. After that Estelle knows she is stronger that Marcus, and tells hime "He can't stop her" Marcus replies saying he will stop her that she is out of control. She then knocks him over and takes his walking stick so he cant get up and destroys all the machinery so he can't change Micheal back, he drags himself to the room and she she hits him over the head while saying "You'll never stop me". Micheal goes to see an old friend and is explaining to her that he sometimes can't remember things, and in that second Estelle is playing games with weak Marcus, she has entered his mind and makes him grab a pair of scissors, when his friend comes up behind him to ask whats wrong Estelle chenches her hands and makes him stab her over and over. She is unstoppible at the moment. Micheal then cleans up and goes to the local club where Nicole and beaten up Alan are, He's watching the female signer on stage, Estelle has entered into his mind once more and made him follow her, they then leave the club and go to a strange place, walking down an allyway they stop and he orders her to sing, when she doesnt sing, Estelle says "now" and he strangles her. Estelle is loving that her husband cannot do anything about what she is making Micheal do. Alan figues out that Micheal has been killing these girls and shows Nicole, Alan and Nicole go and find Micheal at his work and confront him about the singer, and he denies it. While Alan and Nicole are still in the shop questioning Micheal about the girls who have been murdered, Estelle once again gets into Micheals mind, makes him attack Alan while Nicole runs out of the shop. Police are on their way when they see nicole running towards them, Micheal hears the sirens and steals a car to get away. Whille driving from the police Marcus is fighting to get into Micheals mind, eventually he does and he makes him crash the car where it explodes and kills all 3 of them.

60 Second Remake Of

Minimalist Film Poster

The film I have chosen to make a minimalist film poster on is Monsters Inc. This is a Disney Pixar Production, that was released in February 2002. This is a great film which is suitable for all ages I think. The aim of this exercise was to help us get to grips with using photoshop. Photoshop is a very confusing but a very fun program to work with as you can practically do/create anything you want.
We first started drafting our poster on A4 plain paper, my idea was to have the little girl's (Boo's) teddy and then to have the title below it, I got a picture of the teddy and I couldn't use photoshop to do the right thing.

That idea was a complete fail so I had to come up with another one quick.
This is my film poster for Monsters Inc.

I took the idea of the eye with the M and an eye in the middle as i think it's very important and a lot of people recognise the image, it's the logo of the company the monsters work for so you see it very often in the film. it's quite jagged around the edge but i think it gives it character, I used big bold writing, which is called Gill Sans Ultra Bold. I used a light blue for the colouring of the writing as I think it refers to the film. The background is black but Steve said it looks good when you put a image behind the back ground for example a old looking piece of paper or something and making the black background transparent so it makes it look more effective. I am really please with the outcome and look forward to doing more on Photoshop

This is the cover for the DVD of Monster Inc;

Comic Stip On

Hammer Horror Productions

This is my Hammer Productions comic strip. It starts at the beginning when Enrique Carrerra's and Will Hinds run it as a Film distribution company called Exclusive. It goes on to how Enrique's son takes over and turned it into a production entity. It tells you all about Hammer Productions untill the end when Hammer went into recievership in 1979 and Carrerras resigned as director.
